The scientific name for lizards is Squamata. Lizards belong to the class Reptilia, which also includes snakes, turtles, and crocodilians. Within the class Reptilia, lizards are further classified into the order Squamata, which is divided into two suborders: Lacertilia (the true lizards) and Serpentes (the snakes).

Lizards are characterized by their elongated bodies, scaly skin, and four legs (in most species). Unlike snakes, lizards have eyelids, external ear openings, and the ability to detach their tails as a defense mechanism. Lizards are also known for their diverse behaviors, such as basking in the sun to regulate body temperature, hunting prey with their sharp teeth, and using camouflage to avoid predators.
