Angel Fish and Pterophyllum Fish: A Comprehensive Guide

Angel fish, scientifically known as Pterophyllum, are freshwater fish native to South America. They are known for their distinctive triangular-shaped bodies, elongated fins, and vibrant coloration, making them popular choices for aquarium enthusiasts.

Angel fish require a spacious tank with plenty of vertical swimming space due to their tall bodies and long fins. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a pair of angel fish. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water with a temperature range of 75-82°F and ample hiding spots among plants or decorations.

Angel fish are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet to meet their nutritional needs. A balanced diet can include high-quality flake or pellet food, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. It is important to feed them multiple times a day in small portions to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Angel fish are susceptible to common aquarium diseases such as ich (white spot disease), fin rot, and bacterial infections. To prevent these issues, maintain good water quality, provide a balanced diet, and avoid overcrowding in the tank. Quarantine new fish before introducing them to an established tank to prevent the spread of diseases.

Angel fish are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with other peaceful fish of similar size and temperament. Suitable tank mates include tetras, gouramis, corydoras catfish, and other non-aggressive species that can tolerate the same water parameters.
