A heat pump transfers heat energy from one place to another – usually from the outside air or ground into your home. In doing so, it circulates air and can influence humidity levels.

  • Air-to-air heat pumps are common in India and work like advanced air conditioners that can both cool and heat. They also dehumidify the air, which is useful during humid monsoon months but can make the air too dry in winter.
  • Air-to-water heat pumps are often used for water heating or radiant floor systems. They affect humidity less directly but still influence air circulation.
  • Ground-source heat pumps provide stable heating and cooling with minimal impact on humidity, though they require good ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.

How to Avoid Air That’s Too Dry

In northern and central India, winters can bring dry air, especially when heat pumps run for long hours. Here are some simple ways to maintain healthy humidity:

  • Ventilate daily – open windows for 5–10 minutes in the morning and evening to refresh indoor air without losing too much heat.
  • Add indoor plants – species like areca palm, peace lily, and money plant release moisture and improve air quality.
  • Use a humidifier – particularly in bedrooms and living areas where you spend most of your time.
  • Dry clothes indoors occasionally – this adds moisture, but make sure the room is well-ventilated to prevent mould.

A small hygrometer can help you monitor humidity levels easily and adjust your habits accordingly.

How to Control Excess Humidity

In coastal and tropical regions, such as Kerala, Goa, or Mumbai, high humidity is a year-round challenge. Here, your heat pump can actually help by dehumidifying the air.

  • Use the dehumidification mode on your heat pump if available – it’s effective during monsoon season.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms, where moisture builds up quickly.
  • Maintain a steady indoor temperature – large temperature swings can cause condensation on walls and windows.
  • Inspect for damp spots or mould – early signs of excess humidity should be addressed immediately.

Combine Your Heat Pump with Good Ventilation

Even the most advanced heat pump can’t create a healthy indoor climate on its own. It needs to work together with proper ventilation. A balanced ventilation system with heat recovery is ideal, as it replaces stale air with fresh air while retaining most of the heat or coolness.

If you don’t have a mechanical ventilation system, you can still improve air quality by opening windows regularly and keeping interior doors open to allow air to circulate freely.
